So, you have a great business, or a product or service to sell and you feel ready to start sharing it, or you’ve already been sharing but haven’t quite had the uptake you’d like. It sounds like it’s time to get a few things in order and set yourself up to market yourself in a way that gets results, but without getting overwhelmed in the process.
It’s easy to start thinking about what ‘others’ do and begin to panic that you aren’t doing the same, nor have any idea where to begin. You may sporadically set things up like social media accounts or produce certain marketing materials simply because ‘that’s what everyone does’, not because you know it’s the right thing for you. If you’re lucky you’ll get some of it right and it won’t be time wasted, but there is a much better way to go about it all.
Here are five ways you can comfortably approach your marketing, without getting overwhelmed. In our upcoming blog posts we’ll go into these in a bit more detail, but for now…
1. Talk to someone. Anyone.
Have a conversation with a friend you haven’t seen in a while, or a neighbour, hair dresser, or anyone you can spend some time with, who isn’t too close to your current life. Tell them all about what you’re doing and hoping to achieve. It’s amazing how this can force you to define everything, keep it simple and understandable, and recognise things you may be missing or will need to make clear. It’s equally amazing how many good ideas people like to give you, when they see you doing something amazing.
2. Do some doodling to download
Draw a Mind Map to start to draw out the contents of your mind. Grab a big piece of paper and your favourite pen or pencil (is it just me who is particular about the stationery I use??) and lay it out on a clean table, free of clutter and distractions, including your mobile phone. Make yourself a cuppa, and settle in for a creative download. Start with your business name, product, service or offering in the very middle. Let you mind wander and begin to draw lines coming out of that central wording to write other categories, thoughts, ideas or whatever it is that comes to your mind. You’ll be amazed by what you come up with, and benefit from starting to organise your thoughts and recognise any gaps.
3. Be a harmless stalker
Have a look at what other relevant businesses are doing with their marketing and communications and take note of the things you think look great or work well. This is a simple way to get ideas for what might work for you, and help you start to imagine your offering materialising in various marketing materials.
4. Get some direction
Set yourself some goals to work towards in the short to medium term, while having a longer term end goal generally in mind (remember we don’t want to get overwhelmed as it’s counter-productive!). Think about what you might want to have set up/achieve within 3 months, 6 months and 1 year, and write them down on a piece of paper you can stick up on your wall somewhere. Keep them realistic and achievable, while challenging you a little at the same time. When you set goals it starts to provide a focus, and goals are the best friend to motivation. Without them it’s easy to coast along doing bits and pieces but not really moving forward as well as you could be.
5. Get focussed and practical
Create a simple Marketing Plan to help define your objective, identify who your target audience are and how best to reach them, come up with the words to say and the ways to communicate to your audience, and write a to-do list you can follow and tick off.
The Marketing Mate Web App has been created to guide you through the right thought process to come up with the things you really need to be clear about, in order to get on with some good marketing. You don’t need to be a marketing specialist, you just need someone to tell you what you should decide on, and that’s where the Marketing Plan Wizard can really help. Follow the steps and enter your answers, and before you know it you’ll have a Marketing Plan you can refer to, put into action, review/change, show to banks, designers, colleagues and more. There is some sort of magic that happens once you’ve created a Marketing Plan. All of a sudden everything begins to move in the right direction, and it’s like the Universe is suddenly on your side and making things happen like never before.
Feel free to start trying these out, and see what begins to happen for you…!
